About me

Hi! My name is BK. I graduated from the University of Northumbria (now known as Northumbria University) in 2001 with a LL.B (Hons) Degree  and a Postgraduate Diploma (Bar Vocational Course) in 2002. I am a Barrister-at-Law of the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn. I was called and admitted to practise as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2003 and subsequently called and admitted to practise as an Advocate of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak in Sarawak in 2004. I obtained my  LLM in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of London in November 2006. In 2008 I moved to London to for personal and career development reasons and in 2009, I was admitted as a Solicitor of England and Wales.

My intention of setting up this website is to serve as an information hub for would-be aspiring lawyers. Being relatively new myself, I decided to jot down my experiences so that law graduates can have an idea of how its like to enter practice in the first place. Two years down the road, I consider myself extremely fortunate to be surrounded by very knowledgable bosses and mentors whose passion for this profession inspires me greatly.

When I first arrived in Newcastle, I had no idea what to expect, and I had no idea what to do. This is despite the fact that I looked at the University's website for tips and advice several times just to get a general idea of the place. Therefore I hope by setting up this page, I can at least provide a clearer picture for students who wish to pursue their studies at Northumbria University.

I updated three pages on studying law, doing the Bar Vocational Course and pupillage in Malaysia. Following this I also created a page on postgraduate law study and am currently working on a page dedicated to studying the QLTT. This website is intended to serve as a general guide for students or anybody interested in pursuing a career in law.

Acknowledgements

I would like to take this opportunity to thank May Yen for her help in constructing this website. She has been a great friend and has always been patient with my endless queries. A big thanks to all my lovely friends in Newcastle who inspired me to create this website so that we can all keep in touch. Last but not least,I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my family who has made everything possible for me.

I would also like to thank Archangel, my soulmate who has been with me through thick and thin.

My interests:

I also love music and hold a Diploma of Associateship (A.L.C.M.) awarded by the London College of Music. I am the piano accompanist for the Kuching Chung Hua Middle School No. 3 Alumni Choir. Part of this website is dedicated to the activities of the choir. I strongly advocate the skills of playing by ear and from memory, and spontaneous piano accompaniment. This requires strong listening skills and a good sense of harmony. Part of my goal is to develop a systematic learning scheme to encourage students to play by ear and compose their own accompaniment, thereby making music more accessible.

I am currently a member of the London Philharmonic Choir and participate regularly in concerts throughout London.

It is with great hope that you will find the information in this website useful, and may you share my passion and drive to excel in the legal profession.
